Entrepreneur Ron Baker Builds a New Business From the Ground Up

In 1991, Ron Baker's future wasn't looking bright. He had herniated a disc in his back—a major injury that lost him his home renovation job. He was virtually bankrupt. He knew that he wanted to pursue a new career in home inspections, but lacked the funds he needed to get started in business.

Starting out as an entrepreneur
An initial $500 small business loan from ACCION USA started Ron Baker's career as a home inspector—and entrepreneur. Ron Baker became one of the first people in Massachusetts to get a state license in home inspection, which became available in 2001. He now has a steady and growing client base of banks, homebuyers and others. He has a business partner. And he has built a successful business from the ground up.

Expanding into education
Always an entrepreneur, Ron recently added a new line of business that leverages his extensive knowledge and experience—educating homebuyers and future home inspectors. Ron and his business partner offer seven 3-hour sessions per semester, as well as up to 25 field visits—helping train eager students about what to look for when inspecting (or buying) a home. "I enjoy the teaching part," he says. "I have fun with it."

His students agree. From Ron, they learn more than how to pass the home inspection test. They learn about safety issues. They learn to use all their senses to inspect homes. They hear anecdotes about Ron's years in the field. And they have fun. "I like helping people," says Ron. "I like to think that we give our clients hope."

Looking ahead, Ron foresees expanding his business even more. And he hopes to inspire others to become entrepreneurs.
