Liliana Diaz Daycare

ACCION USA helps day care provider get the credit she needed

Liliana Diaz left Colombia to get away from the drugs and violence. Now she runs her Boston-area day care center, taking care of children from diverse backgrounds every day. Above the sound of children, you'll hear music from all over Latin America-and lots of different languages being spoken. Liliana's multicultural day care center is thriving.

Learning how to do more with less
But that wasn't always the case. "To start a day care center, you either need lots of money or a loan," she says. Having neither, Liliana had to be creative. She bought the majority of her day care center materials second-hand from friends and at yard sales. And she had to look to non-traditional sources for financing.

Building credit and a business
She received a mailing from ACCION and applied for a $500 Credit Builder loan, which enabled her to establish solid credit for her business-and buy a computer for her day care center. Though she's still working hard, Liliana is her own boss, and she enjoys working with kids. Plus, the life she and her family lead here in the U.S. is comfortable.
