Independence through Small Business Ownership
For over seven years, Luis Zapeda Alvarez has risen daily at 2:00 a.m. to begin delivering a supply of baked goods to delis and restaurants throughout New York City. Although the streets are still dark, Luis doesn't mind the early start-it's a small price to pay for the independence that owning his own small business provides.
From Unemployed to Self-Employed
Luis's road to self-employment was not easy. Once unemployed and homeless, Luis's life changed when he found work making bakery deliveries for a local company. His regular route included a morning stop at New York's World Trade Center, and on September 11, 2001, he made his usual 8:30 a.m. stop. Luis walked to his second stop before the attacks; his truck, however, was lost in the rubble.
Rather than face unemployment for a second time, Luis decided to begin his own delivery service. When he found that the banks were not able to provide him with a loan due to his financial history, he turned to ACCION USA for the money he needed to purchase his first truck.
Steady Business Growth Thanks to ACCION USA
Luis's business has grown steadily ever since. He now runs three daily delivery routes and has hired a part-time employee to help out. He has become a role model and provider for his 12-year old son, and knows that his two older boys, both Marines, are proud of his accomplishments.
Luis's most recent loan for $5,600 allowed him to improve the insulation in his utility truck-and to continue his delivery route through New York's hot and humid summer.
Each day, countless entrepreneurs like Luis struggle to earn a living wage. By making a donation to ACCION USA, you'll help Luis and others build a business that provides a steady source of employment and income.
